This is a file that I downloaded from Aldus/Pagemaker forum some time ago.
Hope it helps you...It sure helped us...bob goodman
The PC version of PageMaker will now import files created with the AutoCAD
drawing program by AutoDesk, Inc. One of PageMaker's import filters for
AutoCAD is an ADI (Autodesk Device Interface) Plotter file with the extension
".PLT" for 'plot'. The procedure for creating an ADI plotter file follows:
1) Configuring the Plotter
- From DOS's prompt type ACAD to enter the AutoCAD program
- Main Menu - select option 5 - Configure AutoCAD
- Configuration Menu - select option 5 - Configure Plotter
AutoCAD will inform you of the current settings and ask
"Do you wish to select a different one? <N>" Y
- Select option 2 - ADI Plotter
- Select output format
0. Ascii file
1. Binary file
2. AutoCAD DXB file
3. Installed INT driver
Output format <0 to 3> 0 or 1
PageMaker will accept either the Ascii or Binary format. The main difference
between the two is the size of the file; binary is much more compact,
although it contains the same information as an ascii file.
2) Long List
Now, you are presented with a long list of options and plotter
settings. Thankfully, the usual default settings are listed in brackets <>
and, with a few exceptions, only the RETURN key need be pressed
to accept each one.
Does the plotter have multiple pens? <N>
Does the plotter have multiple dashed line styles? <N> Y
How many line styles are there, 2 to 127 <5>:
Is the plotter variable speed? <N>
Specify plot size in millimeters? <N>
Maximum horizontal (X) plot size in inches <11.0000>:
Plotter steps per inch in the horizontal (X) direction <1000.0>: 1440
Maximum vertical (Y) plot size in inches <8.5000>:
Plotter steps per inch in the vertical (Y) direction <1440.0>:
Do you want to change pens while plotting? <N>
Would you like to calibrate your plotter? <N>
Size units (Inches or Millimeters) <I>:
Plot origin in inches? <0.00, 0.00>:
Standard values for plotting size
Size Width Height
A 10.50 8.00
MAX 11.00 8.50
Enter the size or Width, Height (in Inches) <MAX>:
Rotate 2D plots 90 clockwise? <N>
Pen width <0.010>:
Adjust area fill boundaries for pen width? <N>
Remove hidden lines? <N>
Specify scale by entering:
Plotted-Inches = Drawing Units or Fit or ? <F>
3) Is It Soup Yet?
After the all the questions have been answered, you will be presented once
again with AutoCAD's Configuration Menu.
- Select option 0 - Exit to Main Menu
Keep configuration changes? <Y>
4a) Plotting from the Main Menu
- Select option 3 - Plot a drawing
- Enter NAME of drawing: (without .DWG extension))
4b) Plotting from the Command Menu
- Type PLOT at the Command> prompt
or
- Select PLOT, then PLOTTER with the pointing device
5) Now We're Getting Somewhere
Specify the part of drawing to be plotted by entering:
Display, Extents, Limits, View, or Window <D>
AutoCAD will now display a list of the plotter parameters that are currently
selected and ask "Do you want to change anything? <N>". Answer Y for yes.
- Change list so it reads "Plot will be written to a selected file"
- Enter file name for plot <default>: (without .PLT extension)
AutoCAD will write the specified portion of the drawing to disk and
automatically add the .PLT extension to the filename. The resulting file can
then be read into PC PageMaker with the Place command.
6) Unhand Me, You CAD
Some additional items, pertaining to PageMaker's relationship with the
AutoCAD documents, worth mentioning are:
- There is a maximum 64K limit on the size of the 'meta' memory file
generated when PageMaker PLACEs the AutoCAD plot file. This is one of the
constraints, imposed by Windows, that we had to work with. The solution,
although not a great one, is to zoom into the top half or quarter of the
AutoCAD image, plot the Window to disk, and repeat until all sections have been
consumed; then place and move together each individual section. (This is
what needs to be done with the "St Paul's Cathedral" drawing).
- Drawing of the AutoCAD document in PageMaker is fastest if the line is kept
to 1 pixel in width.
- Some of you may remark that the lines of their AutoCAD drawings are too
thick coming from PageMaker. The line width or thickness is hardcoded, in
our import filter, to equal 15 units (plotter steps). Thus, the number of units
(plotter steps) per inch you specify in the above plotter setup will have an effect
on the thickness of the drawing's lines. Replot your AutoCAD drawing using a
higher plotter resolution - if 1440 plotter steps/inch gives a heavy line,
then increasing the resolution to 2880 plotter steps/inch will give a line half as
thick.
- Lastly, there is another driver on the AutoCAD disk called "ADI Printer
Plotter" and this is different from the the "ADI Plotter"; they each have
their own options menu and each create a different file extension. The
former creates an ".IMG" extension, while the latter creates the correct
".PLT" extension required by PageMaker.
